About us

The Sumitomo Group of Companies has a history that goes back over 400 years.  Today, Sumitomo has over 267,000 employees worldwide with annual sales that exceed 400 billion US dollars.

The Sumitomo Group, one of the largest groups of companies in Japan and the world, is active in the most diverse industries, including iron and steel, mechanical engineering, mining, ceramics, real estate, banking and trade.

In the 16th century, Masatomo Sumitomo established a medicine and book store. The companies bearing the prestigious Sumitomo name still adhere to the business philosophy established by Masatomo over 400 years ago.

Integrity, healthy management and the philosophy of not putting profits first form the basis of our success.

The Group currently consists of 20 companies that emphasize their respect for Masatomo Sumitomo by wearing as the company logo the ‘Igeta’ sign, the symbol for the edge of an old Japanese well.

The origins of Sumitomo Drive Technologies in Europe go back to the 1930s. Lorenz Braren invented the Cyclo drive in Munich and established CYCLO Getriebebau GmbH in Munich, Germany, in 1931.  By registering a patent for his invention, Braren had a decisive influence on drive technology with his totally new drive concept.  The Cyclo drive operates without gears; the torque transmitting parts are exposed exclusively to compressive and not shear forces.  For the user of Cyclo drives this offers a considerable advantage.  Sudden failures due to overload are eliminated.

After the 2nd World War Lorenz Braren took up the development of the product once more and continued to optimize the Cyclo drive until his death in 1953.

Towards the end of the 1930s, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, one of the largest mechanical engineering companies in Japan, manufactured and marketed under license the first Cyclo drives in Japan – with considerable success.  In 1974, the company purchased shares in CYCLO Getriebebau GmbH.

The German company was taken over completely by Sumitomo Heavy Industries in 1994 and expanded throughout Europe, operating since 2003 under the worldwide umbrella brand Sumitomo Drive Technologies.  In Europe, the company currently has over 300 employees who manufacture and market a complete range of gear mechanisms and drives.

Decades of experience and innovation, a leading position worldwide in drive and control technology combined with a worldwide presence make Sumitomo Drive Technologies a trustworthy partner for all its customers.
